D-Day - 20: Prelude
the bugle sounds, the door flings open;
theirs hearts stopped for the moment.
and in the square 'twas silent as night;
there hardly was a motion.
like pins they stood in their trembling boots;
it was to miss the mood.
and in the distant, the sound of their mission;
they prayed as hard as they could.
and one by one their names were mentioned;
a ticket to the newton.
and off to war the soldiers trekked;
each guaranteed a no-return.
